As a writer, I am familiar with rejection. To put art into the world means it will be rejected, whether that’s by publisher or consumer. However, even with all this rejection and criticism, I rarely get useful constructive criticism. When I send a story to a journal and it comes back months later with a rejection email, the best I can often expect is a cookie-cutter template with the typical jargon of the industry. Some might add a sentence at the end saying they really enjoyed my story, but it simply doesn’t fit with their journal, or it needed a little more work to be published. The fact remains that they don’t tell me WHAT needs changing, WHAT to do to get published with them.
Truthfully, a lot of getting published relies on the research you do before ever submitting. It’s important to submit to journals within your genre… but what if you’ve already done the research? There’s no arguing that the journals to which you’re submitting publish work with themes like yours, and yet, you still receive that dreaded email.
My aim is to be different. I am not a publisher (though I am open to guest writers, see Violet Thorne’s “Bright Like A Firework“) but I am a writer who has received those rejection emails and wondered, “Why didn’t they publish it?” I offer editorial services for all sorts of writing, with a focus on helping writers understand where their stories need a little extra TLC. And I won’t send back a scripted email; I’ll send a comprehensive breakdown of your prose, offer tips and suggestions on where you could make it better, and praise what you did well. I want to see you succeed as badly as you do.
So, if you want to take your writing to the next level and break into the journal you’ve been dying to get published with, send me a message to set up a consultation! I look forward to reading your stories and delving deeper into your prose with you.
